Payment solutions for branded payment

boncard offers white label payment solutions, in particular gift cards with their own brand for companies. These systems enable companies to accept and process various payment methods – both in brick-and-mortar retail and in e-commerce. At the POS, for example in stores or at vending machines, terminals are usually used for this purpose, through which payments are made by card or contactless via NFC (Near Field Communication). In online retail, integrated systems from payment service providers ensure secure and fast processing. During the checkout process in the web shop, customers enter their card details, which are then securely transmitted to boncard via PSPs such as Saferpay (Worldline), Datatrans (Planet), and Wallee.

We are the leading provider of prepaid payment systems in Switzerland and an independent ep2 acquirer. ep2 is the Swiss payment standard for electronic money transfers at EFTPOS terminals (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale), which ensures secure and uniform processing of card transactions in Switzerland.

Since our founding in 2007, we have implemented more than 500 successful payment solutions and projects. Our core competencies lie in the development of payment software, tools for payment and bonus reconciliation, and customer loyalty systems. Thanks to our in-house development work and specialized know-how, we cover the entire payment process: from card production and payment processing to data-based evaluation.

As a service provider for companies, retail chains, shopping centers, cities, and regions, boncard performs the following tasks:

• Production, coding, activation, and operation of white label cards on all ep2-compatible payment terminals
• Processing of card transactions
• Technical and customer service support for acceptance points
• Operation of app-based redemption options if no ep2 terminals are available

How does ep2 processing work?

ep2 Processing comprises the standardized processing of payment transactions via magnetic strip, chip, NFC, or QR code at all certified ep2 terminals. This standard regulates how electronic payments, such as those made with boncard cards, are technically processed at cash registers (EFT/POS systems). Compatibility and security are ensured through uniform specifications for protocols, interfaces, and security functions. ep2 standardizes everything from card selection to processing rules, manages terminal connectivity and security for end-to-end transactions, and ensures compatibility for all parties involved, such as different card types, acquirers, and terminals. The ep2 system, originally developed for stationary payment terminals (POS), also supports online payments, i.e., payment transactions on the Internet or via mobile commerce.

When boncard activates a payment solution, it integrates it on all ep2-compatible terminals at the acceptance points. It takes care of the technical connection, ensures secure payment processing, processes all transactions in accordance with ep2 specifications, and provides the billing data for the card-issuing institution (issuer).

The boncard system centrally records all acceptance points and partner stores in the shopping center so that cards can be redeemed in accordance with ep2 via payment terminals or integrated cash registers. Automatic, periodic settlements ensure that branches and partner companies reliably receive their payments, including detailed transaction data. This means that everyone involved benefits from a high level of transparency, a clear overview, and greatly simplified administration. The modern boncard machine, the BONomat, facilitates the smooth purchase and processing of gift card transactions in the center. Integrated voucher systems for public transport

boncard won the SBB tender “Neue Gutscheinwelt” (New Voucher World) in 2023 thanks to its comprehensive payment transaction expertise and a flexibly adaptable system solution developed entirely in Switzerland. In close coordination with SBB, all systems were integrated technically and procedurally to ensure reliable and smooth voucher processing. The web shop converts old e-vouchers into new ones and sells new digital vouchers (Print@Home vouchers). In a later phase, contactless physical voucher cards, which are available online and at points of sale, were introduced. Vouchers can be redeemed easily and securely via payment terminals at ticket machines or counters – and, since February 2025, directly in the SBB app. > Details about the project: Gutscheinwelt ÖV

Why is boncard involved in the ep2 technical cooperation?

With the acquisition of the ep2 acquiring license in 2010 and the launch of our own ep2 host, we were able to quickly establish the “boncard PAY” and “Schweizer Lunch-Check” brands in Switzerland, followed by “ÖV-Gutscheine” in 2024. Thanks to its membership and cooperation with ep2, boncard can issue gift or payment cards for a closed user group and accept these cards on the existing infrastructure, processing them like any other payment transaction in the downstream processes.

ep2 enables Swiss retail and service companies to access a nationwide, uniform, and recognized payment infrastructure that is widely accepted in Switzerland. The integration of a wide variety of payment methods is made easy and is continuously being developed. For acceptance points, using ep2, especially via service providers such as boncard, means a significant reduction in administrative and technical effort as well as high efficiency and scalability.
